ILO celebrates its 90th anniversary

In 2009 the International Labour Organization celebrates its 90th anniversary. To mark this milestone in Asia and the Pacific, special events will be held in many countries between 21-28 April, on the theme of “90 years working for social justice”.

This year, the ILO and its members are celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Organization’s formation in 1919. The ILO is the oldest specialized agency of the United Nations (which was formed in 1946) and the only surviving major creation of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles.

In Asia and the Pacific, as in other regions, ILO90 is being marked by a wide range of high level activities during the week of 21-28 April, (the ILO’s original Constitution was approved on 28 April 1919). These activities are being promoted with the slogan “90 years working for social justice” and organized by the ILO’s tripartite constituents -- Governments, workers and employers -- with support from the ILO.

The design and content of individual events reflect the different situations in individual member countries, but all aim to highlight the tangible work done by the ILO to improve the lives of working people. At the same time they create forums in which key contemporary issues can be highlighted, including the need for fair globalization, decent work, the financial crisis, and building coherent economic and social development policies. Among the national events planned are high level symposiums, workshops and rallies, exhibitions, music and dance performances, radio and TV programmes, newspaper supplements, essays, photo and drawing competitions, and commemorative postage stamps.
