The ILO seeks the promotion of social justice and internationally recognized human and labour rights. Within this overall goal, it has adopted two international legally binding Conventions, specifically on the situation of indigenous and tribal peoples: Conventions Nos. 107 and169
Also, a number of other ILO standards and programmes are highly relevant for indigenous peoples such as those concerning discrimination, child labour and forced labour.
A specialised team is in charge of the legal supervision of Conventions related to indigenous peoples and discrimination:
The Equality, Migrant workers and Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Team.
Based on Convention No. 169, the ILO implements a multi-disciplinary programme on indigenous peoples’ rights and development with two main components:
The Programme to Promote ILO Convention No. 169 (PRO 169), and
The Indigenous Peoples & Local Economic Development (IP/LED).
Apart from the coordination units at the ILO Headquarters in Geneva, these programmes have activities and staff in a number of countries.
