WORLD DAY FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK, 2009

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work has the following topic this year:

Health and life at work: A basic human right

The World Day, celebrated every year on April 28th, is part of an international campaign to give occupational safety and health the highest priority in international and national political agendas. The first World Day was organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2003.

The SafeWork Programme at ILO has prepared a short booklet to serve as a background to this year's theme. It stresses the need for protecting workers’ right to a safe and healthy working environment. It also takes into account the current economic crisis and the need for a response, spreading the ILO’s message of social justice for a fair globalization. Other products have also been produced including posters, bookmarks, notepads, pins, pens and sticker postcards.

Because the celebration this year coincides with the ILO’s 90th anniversary, SafeWork has planned to organize a number of activities at ILO premises in Geneva including a photo exhibition relevant to the theme which will be displayed during the week of the 28th of April and a number of videos on safety and health which will be broadcast in the ILO cinema on the World Day itself. The peak of the World Day will be a panel session involving influential speakers in this field and our social partners. The audience will include ILO colleagues, other UN agencies, non governmental organizations, universities and the public. We are aware of many activities which will take place around the world in commemoration of this day and we encourage and congratulate these efforts which voice the need for safer and healthier workplaces as a basic human right.
