In 2008, the "Work Improvement in Neighbourhood Development" (WIND) manual was launched in Spanish, entitled "Mejores Trabajos para el Desarrollo Comunitario". This manual provides inexpensive practical advice on occupational safety and health for labourers in small-scale farming. The WIND programme aims to improve working and living conditions of farmers and their families. The programme shows how risks can be reduced using affordable means - and, in particular, through the application of knowledge and resources at the disposal of the farmers themselves. The WIND programme was first developed by the ILO in Viet Nam, in collaboration with other organizations. It was also adapted to local conditions, translated and pilot-tested in Ethiopia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Senegal. WIND is a truly collaborative effort, in which ILO technical units at Headquarters (in particular, SECTOR and CIS), ILO experts in the field, national social partners and other local organizations participated. The Spanish version of the WIND manual is being disseminated in Latin America with the hope that its measures will be adopted to improve both working and living conditions in rural life in the region. Updated by MAP. Approved by GS. Last update: 2.4.2009.
