National Seminar Held to Raise Awareness of International Labour Standards in Eritrea, 2-4 August 2007

A three-day national seminar organized and facilitated by SRO-Cairo examined the situation of the Labour Law in Eritrea and raised awareness of international labour standards among the 48 participants, representing high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Labour and Human Welfare (MLHW), the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) and the Employers’ Federation of Eritrea (EFE).

Activities included:

  • An introduction to the ILO’s mandate and its supervisory system
  • An in-depth discussion of the eight fundamental ILO Conventions (C.111, C.100, C.98, C.87, C.29, C.105, C.138 and C.182)
  • A reminder of the Director-General’s campaign to promote the ratification of the ILO constitutional amendment on the abrogation of obsolete conventions
  • Design of a plan of action to chart the way forward

Further workshops to develop an in-depth knowledge of Conventions C.122, C.81 and C.129 are being considered to complement this awareness raising event.
